Gareth O’Brien’s honesty on relationship with Daryl Powell

Gareth O’Brien has been at Castleford for over a year now, having joined from stricken Super League side Toronto Wolfpack midway through 2020.

The Canadian side had failed to fulfil their top-flight fixtures and so bowed out of the competition, only to be refused entry once more towards the back end of last year.

Whilst some Toronto players didn’t find new clubs, O’Brien was one of the lucky ones that did as Castleford came straight in for the playmaker.

With the Tigers’ head coach Daryl Powell wanting to sign O’Brien for a long time, the former Warrington and St Helens man knew he wanted to move to the Jungle.

“He (Powell) tried to sign me before I ended up at Toronto, so it’s good knowing you’re playing for a coach that has that faith in you,” O’Brien said.

“It’s a shame he’s moving on as he’s done a great job here at Cas and Warrington have got a good coach in him.”

O’Brien was also keen to note how much the team wants to win something for the veteran coach.

“We want to finish as best as we can for him, so there’s a real buzz around the place at the minute.”
