Frontrunners for former Saint Luke Thompson emerge as transfer gets closer

Luke Thompson is set to head to either Wests Tigers or North Queensland, according to the Daily Telegraph.

A three-year deal has reportedly been offered by Wests for Thompson, with the former St Helens star having already met coach Michael Maguire about a possible move from 2022. North Queensland are also in the hunt for the prop, having expressed their formal desire to bring him to the club.

It’s not only those two that are interested though, as other NRL clubs are trying to somehow fit Thompson into their salary cap, whilst a return to Super League isn’t out of the question.

Thompson has two years left on his deal at Belmore and could still remain at Canterbury long-term if they can’t find a club to pick up a large chunk of his contract.

The Merseysider made 163 appearances for St Helens before leaving for the NRL at the end of 2020 and has since played 26 games for Canterbury.
