“Free negotiations” for NRL clubs chasing Warrington Wolves star George Williams

Former Wigan Warriors halfback and Warrington Wolves star George Williams has recently been linked with a return to the NRL.

Williams was impressive in the NRL with the Canberra Raiders back in 2020 before he returned to England mid way through the 2021 campaign.

He impressed during the Rugby League World Cup scoring three tries, assisting 13 and making 101 metres on average per game in an impressive display from Williams after the Wolves struggled in 2022 finishing 11th.

This has seen NRL clubs interested in bringing Williams back but according to The Mole of Wide World of Sports, the Wolves have no interest in letting Williams leave after all he has two years left on his current deal at the club.

However, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, all NRL clubs can chase Williams in what ZeroTackle is calling a “free negotiations.”

This is because, unlike with other examples, there is no clause in Williams’ contract that says his former club Canberra Raiders would have first refusal on the halfback should he return to the NRL.

This was the same with fellow former Raider and current Wigan Warriors star John Bateman who is expected to sign for Wests Tigers.

What’s interesting is the fact this first refusal was held by Wigan when Williams returned from the NRL to Super League, but he ended up moving to Warrington.
