Forward on the radar of Super League clubs chased by surprise team

Super League

NRL forward Jack de Belin has been linked with a number of Super League clubs this year, and he has now been contacted by a surprise name.

Only contracted with St George Illawarra until the end of this year, the former State of Origin man can play as a loose-forward and as a prop.

ABC have reported that he wants to stay with St George, where he’s spent his entire career, but there’s no talk of a renewal being likely, so he will surely have to look elsewhere if he wants to continue playing.

Asked if he could head to Super League, he said: “That’s the thing I’ve got to weigh up as well now.”

“At the same time, footy careers are a short thing and you’ve got to cash in and make the most of it while you can. It is a lot, it’s a massive move.”

He has been partiularly linked with Leigh Leopards, but has also received offers from other clubs.

According to Wide World of Sports, the 33-year-old has received interest from South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Souths had reportedly been interested earlier in the year before the interest cooled off due to salary cap problems.

Now, they seem to be back in the market for the Papua New Guinea international, who has made over 200 NRL appearances.

It therefore seems that if English clubs are genuinely interested in signing him, they’ll be up against one of the world’s biggest clubs in the race for his signature.

On a large contract currently, of close to the equivalent of £400,000, it would be a huge statement of intent if he was snapped up by a Super League name.

He still, seemingly, has the quality to start first-grade games, as he’s started 10 NRL games this season.
