Former Wigan winger walks free from custody after drugs battle

Brett Dallas has walked free from custody after a court heard how his addiction to crystal meth left him in a “pitiful state”.

The Mackay Supreme Court had sentenced Dallas to two-and-a-half years in jail after the ex-Wigan man had admitted to a charge of aggravated drug possession.

The Courier Mail, operating in Queensland, Australia, reported that Justice Graeme Crow had agreed that Dallas had “served enough time” and should be released immediately after being detained for 10 months.

The court was told he is on a compulsory treatment order, with the former winger addicted to crystal meth – nicknamed ice – after being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2014.

Dallas had previously been convicted of stealing, but Justice Crow took sympathy on him, warning him his “serious mental health problems will only be exacerbated by resort to illicit drugs” and reduce him to the “pitiful state” the 46-year-old now found himself in.
