Former Wigan Warriors star confirms immediate retirement following injury heartbreak

Ex-Wigan Warriors centre Iain Thornley has officially announced his immediate retirement from professional rugby league after a gruelling 16-year career.

The 33-year-old, who enjoyed two separate stints with his hometown club Wigan and won a Super League and Challenge Cup double in 2013, confirmed he has hung up his boots following a mutual agreement to release him from his contract at Oldham Roughyeds.

Luckless injury setbacks severely impacted Thornley’s two-year spell with Oldham.

After scoring six tries in his first eight appearances, Thornley suffered a devastating ACL injury that required surgery and kept him on the sidelines for 428 days.

Despite fighting back to make his return to action in June, another cruel injury blow the following month ultimately brought his playing days to an early end.

“Never thought I’d represent my hometown club”

Writing an emotional message on social media to confirm his decision, Thornley paid special tribute to Wigan Warriors for launching his professional career.

“All good things must come to an end, after 16 unforgettable years I am retiring from professional rugby,” Thornley wrote.

“From starting at Ashton Bears in my amateur years and going on to Wigan St Pats, it started that love of rugby league,

“Never would I have thought I would get to do it as a living and represent my hometown club Wigan Warriors, to whom I am very grateful to for all the training and time they put into me as a young kid and then a player,

“I have some incredible memories from my short stint in rugby union and my career in rugby league and gave everything when I wore the jersey,

“To all the clubs I represented, I thank you for allowing me to live my dream—to all the staff, coaches, players and fans, thank you for giving me so many memories and friendships I know will last a lifetime.”

Across a distinguished career, Thornley made over 190 senior appearances, featuring for Wigan Warriors, Hull KR, Catalans Dragons, Leigh, and Wakefield Trinity, along with a brief code-switch spell at Sale Sharks.

Oldham head coach Alan Kilshaw paid tribute to the veteran back, hailing his impact off the field despite his restricted game time.

“Iain was the ultimate pro,” Kilshaw said.

“He has been unlucky with injuries in his time at the club but has been a great leader off the field for us,

“He has had a great career and we wish him luck in his next chapter.”
