Former Wigan Warriors player becomes free agent after exit

Former Wigan Warriors youngster leaves Championship side

Former Wigan Warriors youngster Adam Jones has left Championship side Widnes Vikings, citing a lack of game time.

The 22-year-old only joined the Vikings in the off-season after failing to make an appearance for Wigan. He has previous Championship and League 1 experience, having spent time on loan at York Knights, Cornwall and Rochdale Hornets.

Back in November, he penned a one-year deal with the Vikings to kickstart his senior career. However, he spent the majority of the 2024 season sidelined with a serious knee injury.

2025 was meant to be his year to get his match fitness back and work on his overall game but so far, he’s failed to play a game for the Vikings.

Widnes head coach Allan Coleman said: “Adam was very similar to Reagan (Sumner), in that he just wasn’t getting the game time he wanted. Unfortunately it’s just not worked out for him and the last thing I want to do is stand in his way of getting game time and improving as an individual.

“I rate him highly and I’m gutted to be losing him but for his development. The most important thing is that he’s out there playing regularly.”

After joining the Vikings in November, the former Wigan Warriors youngster was excited to get back to playing rugby league in the Championship.

He said: “I’m really excited to have signed with such a great club with lots of history. I’m hoping to bring passion and a good work ethic to the team and when I get the chance to play, I’ll always put my best foot forward to improve the team in any way I can.

He added: “The team looks strong from 1-17 and that motivates me to add competition for places. The performances from the team last year were a big factor in me signing here, getting to the playoffs was massive and I’m determined to help the team do even better next season.”

The former Wigan Warriors youngster will be hoping to find a new club quickly as the Championship season continues, with round three coming this weekend.
