Former Wigan Warriors hooker Amir Bourouh named in new position for Salford Red Devils’ reserves

Last season, when Wigan needed a nine following a string of injuries in the spine, Adrian Lam turned to two young hookers in Amir Bourouh and the younger Brad O’Neill.

Bourouh was even recalled from his successful loan with Halifax Panthers to figure for the Warriors having debuted for the club against Salford Red Devils in 2019 at 18 years of age. Despite his clear potential, the emergence of Joe Shorrocks as a reliable back up nine and O’Neill’s presence in the squad prompted Bourouh to look for opportunities elsewhere and he joined Salford Red Devils ahead of the new season despite interest from other clubs again underlining his clear potential.

With stiff competition at the AJ Bell from the likes of Andy Ackers and Chris Atkin in Paul Rowley’s squad, Bourouh has yet to play for the Red Devils instead spending time on loan with London Broncos for two weeks.

With the Red Devils’ reserves set to take on London’s reserves today, Bourouh is back with Salford and in the side to take on the Broncos but interestingly the exciting 21-year-old hooker has not been started at nine but instead has been given the number 13 shirt as loose-forward.

With Bourouh kept at the club whilst the likes of Morgan Escare, Matt Costello and Jack Wells have been moved on loan this week, it shows that Bourouh is still a part of Rowley’s immediate plans and if he can impress in this new role for the reserves today he may force his way into the side due to his versatility as both a nine and backrower.
