Former Wigan Warriors head coach Michael Maguire has been appointed as head coach for Brisbane Broncos.

Also previously a South Sydney Rabbitohs and Wests Tigers head coach, Maguire was with Wigan for two years.

In his first year, he won the Super League Grand Final with the Warriors, and the next year, won the Challenge Cup, to make it an extremely positive two years for the club.

He also went on to win the NRL Premiership with the Rabbitohs – their first for 43 years.

He managed to help the New Zeaand national team to first in the world rankings in his time there, from 2018 to 2023.

Most recently, he was head coach for NSW Blues, guiding them to a series success in State of Origin this year.

However, he was released from his contract this week – and also didn’t have much success with Wests Tigers, his most recent NRL role.

Now, Maguire has been confirmed as the new Brisbane Broncos head coach on a three-year contract.

This is just days after the sacking of Kevin Walters, with the side finishing 12th in the table the season after being Grand Finalists.

A legend at the club, Walters played over 200 games over two spells for the Broncos, wither side of a short stint with Warrington Wolves.

After starting his head coaching career with Catalans Dragons, he had a spell with Queensland before becoming Broncos head coach in 2021.

Maguire said, via a club statement: “The Broncos are one of rugby league’s great clubs and it will be an honour to step into the role of Head Coach.

“The Broncos organisation has a high expectation on everything it does. It’s built a great history and shown the strength of what a club can be and what it can mean to fans. Playing my part in the great vision of what the Broncos stand for is the exciting part for me.

“I can’t wait to get started in Brisbane.”
