Former Wigan Warriors and London Broncos man released from new club

A former Super League journeyman, who can name Wigan Warriors among the 11 teams he has represented in his career, has been released from his current club despite signing a deal ahead of the 2025 campaign.

Maltese international Jarrod Sammut has been released from League One side Keighley Cougars with the club taking to social media to reveal the 38-year-old’s exit.

The Cougars have confirmed that Sammut’s contract has been terminated by mutual consent, with the decision coming just three games into the club’s League One campaign.

It’s been a poor start for the Cougars, of whom much was expected after their second-place finish in 2024 and aggressive recruitment which included the likes of Sammut among others.

Despite that, they’ve had a dire start as they sit at the foot of League One with zero wins from their opening three games whilst having also been dumped from the 1895 Cup at the hands of Featherstone Rovers.

Sammut only signed a deal with Keighley at the end of January meaning his stay with the West Yorkshire club lasted just under two months, with the Cougars having been the 11th different team of the 38-year-old’s career.

Among those former clubs are NRL champions Penrith Panthers and Super League champions Wigan Warriors, whilst he has also spent three spells with London Broncos which amount to over 60 appearances.

He’d make just 13 appearances for Wigan Warriors during his spell at the club in 2019 with the playmaker’s Super League tally standing at 104 games, some of which came for Crusaders, Bradofrd Bulls, Wakefield Trinity and London, as well as Wigan.

Sammut spent much of his recent career in Cumbria, playin for Barrow in 2022 and 2023 before joining Workington in 2024 ahead of a mid-season switch to Bradford. After his Odsal release, he signed with Keighley.

Taking to X, the Cougars announced: “Keighley Cougars can confirm the termination of Jarrod Sammut’s playing contract by mutual consent.

“We wish Jarrod the best of luck in the future and thank him for his efforts during his time at the club.”
