Former Wigan Warriors and England star announces his retirement

George Burgess has had a truly accomplished career.

He is of course one of the Burgess brothers who shone at the South Syndey Rabbitohs and helped them to Grand Final glory in 2014.

He is also an accomplished England international alongside brothers Sam and Tom.

Burgess has had a stab at Super League with the Wigan Warriors but injuries, specifically a hip injury, made things tough on him.

He eventually returned to the NRL with St George Illawarra Dragons but injuries persisted and he left the club at the end of 2022.

He said then that he would either find a new NRL club or retire closing the door on a Super League return.

In the end though, he has chosen to retire taking to Instagram to say:

“It is with a heavy heart that I officially announce my retirement from rugby league.

“It has been a dream come true to live out my boyhood dream and represent my family and country through my time especially at South Sydney Rabbitohs and England Rugby League.

“Unfortunately, injuries ended my career before I would’ve liked but I am a happy man walking away from this beautiful game with my achievements.

“I want to thank all my coaches and team mates over the years who have helped me, along with my loving family and wife Joanna Burgess. Over and out.”

He had been linked with a return to Souths alongside twin Tom and older brother Sam who is working as a coach there.
