Former Wigan and Leigh forward to fight local footballer in boxing event

A former two-time Championship-winning Leigh player is set to take part in a charity boxing event scheduled for 2023.

The trend of rugby league players donning the boxing gloves is set to continue, however on this occasion it’s to raise money for charity.

Ex-Wigan Warriors, London Broncos and Leigh Leopards prop forward Tom Spencer is set to appear at MKM Stadium in Hull to face local footballer Mike Stansfield.

The bout has been set for Saturday 11th February 2023, with tickets priced at £25.

Local charity Life For A Kid are putting the event together with the money raised going towards the Hull based charity. You can donate here.

Spencer, 31, only retired from the game 10 days ago so is clearly set on remaining active and competing on a sporting front, even if it is only charity exhibition boxing.

The prop forward featured for multiple sides during his 10-year career ranging from his beginnings at Wigan to representing championship sides Oldham and London Broncos.

His time at Leigh was where he was most prolific and he featured for the club across four spells.

The highlight of his time with the Centurions was consecutive seasons in 2014 and 2015 where he helped his side to a Championship title, but unfortunately stopped short of promotion to the Super League.

In total, he made 170 appearances in the top three divisions, 117 of them coming in Leigh colours.
