Tyrone Roberts, a veteran half of the NRL who used to play for the Warrington Wolves, has joined a new team. Last season, Roberts played for the Burleigh Bears in the QLD Cup.
The 32-year-old has now signed with Northern United in the NRRRL competition according to Zero Tackle. Roberts is the club’s biggest marquee signing since Andrew Walker, who represented both the Kangaroos and Wallabies.
In 2011, Roberts made his NRL debut for the Newcastle Knights. He played 158 first-grade games for the Knights, Gold Coast Titans, and Brisbane Broncos during his ten-season career. He also spent 33 games with the Warrington Wolves in Super League. With Roberts’ help, the Wolves made it to the 2018 Super League Grand Final but were defeated by Wigan. Roberts also helped the club reach the Challenge Cup Final, where they lost to the Catalans Dragons at Wembley.
Most recently, Roberts led the Burleigh Bears to the QLD Cup Grand Final. Unfortunately, the team lost the game 22-18 to the Brisbane Tigers.
Former Warrington Wolves star a major coup
The club are delighted to have signed Roberts ahead of the new season.
“Tyrone brings with him a wealth of experience and leadership that will assist our team, club and community,” Northern United said in a statement.
“(He) has played for several years with the NRL, Super League, NSWRL as well as Queensland Cup.
“Tyrone has also played in the representative scene with NSW Country as well as the NRL Indigenous All Stars.
“A proud family man with a great sense of pride in culture and community, we believe Tyrone is a great addition this season for our club and community.
“We believe Tyrone’s beliefs run parallel to the club’s vision and achieving success on and off the field.”
Leeds Rhinos move away from Warrington Wolves star
The last time Roberts made headlines was when he was being linked with a shock move to Leeds Rhinos as the club looked to replace Aidan Sezer and ironically the man who would replace him at Warrington Blake Austin.
Rohan Smith denied this despite the relationship between the two. Smith did continue to look down under for a halfback eventually snapping up former Huddersfield Giants halfback Matt Frawley but the question of who would partner him remained.
In the end, Leeds completed a £300,000 double coup from Salford Red Devils bringing in both Andy Ackers and Brodie Croft to take the number nine and six jerseys for 2024.
