Darryl van de Velde, former head coach of Castleford Tigers, Huddersfield Giants, and Warrington Wolves, has passed away at the age of 72 in his native Australia.
During his time at Castleford, Van de Velde led the team to the 1992 Challenge Cup final. He also managed to sign Alfie Langer, an Australian and Queensland rugby great, for Warrington while serving as the head coach for five years.
Prior to coaching, he was a rugby player in the Brisbane competition, having played for Easts Tigers, Souths Logan, and Redcliffe. After his playing career, he coached Redcliffe to two Queensland Rugby League premierships.
In addition to his time in England, Van de Velde also served on the QRL board and spent time with the South Queensland Crushers.
“Darryl achieved many great things and was highly respected within the rugby league community,” QRL chairman Bruce Hatcher said.
“It can be a tough game at the best of times, so to be able to play, coach and serve as an administrator at such a high level over many years is a testament to his character and love for the game.”
Castleford and Warrington both expressed their condolences on social media, with the Wire stating they were “deeply saddened” by his passing.

In what will be a fitting tribute, Warrington Wolves will collide with another of Van de Velde’s former clubs this week in the Betfred Super League as the competition ticks into its third week.
The Wolves take on the Castleford Tigers in what will be a big game for both teams. The Wolves will be looking for back to back wins under Sam Burgess as they strive to generate momentum at the start of the new season after a disappointing defeat to Catalans Dragons down to 12 men in Round One.
The Tigers are looking for their first win after showing positive signs against both Wigan Warriors and Salford Red Devils. It should be a fitting tribute to Van de Velde as they meet on the third Friday of the new Super League season.
