It isn’t hard to argue that halfbacks are the most important position in rugby league and especially in Super league. We have seen evidence throughout history such as Kevin Sinfield, Danny McGuire and Rob Burrow at Leeds Rhinos, Sean Long at St Helens, Thomas Leuluai at Wigan Warriors and others have all lead their teams to success.
Right now we’re blessed with some top halfbacks in Super league including Jake Clifford at Hull FC, Lachlan Lam at Leigh Leopards, George Williams at Warrington Wolves and of course the best kicker around at the moment Jordan Abdull at Hull KR.
However, there are a number of clubs in the market for a halfback in 2024.
Leeds stars Aidan Sezer and Blake Austin are both off contract as is Wigan’s Cade Cust who has transitioned into the number nine role.
This means both clubs are interested in halfbacks as are the Catalans Dragons with Mitchell Pearce and Tyrone May set for the NRL.
On top of this, depending on Lam and Clifford’s futures, Hull FC and Leigh could also be in the market.
This means that one former Super League player could make the switch ban.
It was confirmed at the end of last year that Jack Cogger would be leaving the Huddersfield Giants as Ian Watson continued to mould and shape their squad.
It was unknown what would become of Cogger following his departure but in the end it was confirmed that Cogger would join NRL Champions Penrith Panthers as they look to make it three titles on the bounce.
The versatile halfback of course hasn’t been first choice with the World Class Jarome Luai and Nathan Cleary owning the six and seven jerseys at the club, but because of their inevitable representative duties and Cleary’s injury, it was always going to be the case that Cogger got game time.
Cogger signed a one-year deal with the Panthers which is why he could soon leave the club as quick as he arrived.
Zero tackle reported that he would be leaving the club which could make him a legitimate option for Super League clubs though Wests Tigers are considering him as an option as well.
