Former Super League player finds new club after release

Catalans Dragons confirmed that Dylan Napa has been released from his contract for the 2023 season, by mutual consent prior to the new campaign.

Now though he has found a new club or should we say an old club as he has returned to the Sydney Roosters on a train and trial deal.

He is hoping the $1000 a week deal could lead to a permanent NRL move.

This news comes as teammate and potential Catalans Dragons target Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is left out of the Roosters’ side for Round One.

The 34-year-old veteran has featured 33 times for New Zealand and over 250 times for Sydney Roosters but a potential move to Super League had been suggested with the experienced forward in the last year of his current deal and with plenty of competition in the Roosters pack.

Talk of a Super League move started during the World Cup around the time of his infamous “dog shot” which got him sin binned just minutes into his return from suspension.

The forward was initially linked with a move to Catalans Dragons, who could effectively still sign the forward now with two quota spots open and plenty of salary cap.

It was suggested that JWH could be bought out of the final year of his deal and allowed to join the French side.

As a number of clubs did their business, Leigh Leopards emerged as a contender for the Kiwi.

But with JWH locked into a contract, they signed former Leeds Rhinos prop Ava Seumanufagai instead.

Since then, it seemed that he was set to stay in the NRL at least for this season but next season, according to the Sydney Morning Herald, he is headed to Super League.

They reported that “Jared Waerea-Hargreaves is expected to head to the Super League at the end of the season.”

Catalans will likely be a contender given Steve McNamara’s link to the Roosters and as aforementioned the French side could be in a position where they could sign the prop early if the opportunity arises.

However, there is now talk from Zero Tackle that the prop could retire instead of heading over to Europe.

He now faces a big decision between Super League and retirement.
