Castleford Tigers “have to” appoint this coach says former referee

Castleford Tigers

On Friday night after defeat to Huddersfield Giants, Castleford Tigers parted company with Andy Last.

The Tigers looked devoid of ideas offensively in the game as they were nilled by the Giants with a 28-0 defeat.

Last has led the Tigers to wins over Leeds Rhinos, Warrington Wolves and Wakefield Trinity but these haven’t been enough.

A resurgence from Wakefield have seen Castleford plunged into trouble and after fan protests after the final whistle, the club parted company with coach Andy Last.

Last initially took over on a temporary basis as a caretaker with the club looking for a permanent replacement for Lee Radford, who was dismissed following their round three loss to Wigan Warriors, and after six games in a temporary role Last’s appointment was confirmed.

The club won as many games during that six game temporary spell with two wins from six, as they did under Last during his time as the official head coach with that record standing at two wins from thirteen games in all competitions.

That included ten Super League losses as well as an immediate exit from the Challenge Cup and with an overall record of just four wins from nineteen games, sitting bottom of the table and looking down the barrel of relegation it meant the club finally pulled the trigger.

Castleford released a statement, albeit a brief one, with the promise of further information after the weekend.

The statement read:

“Castleford Tigers can confirm that Andy Last has departed the club with immediate effect.

“The club will make a further statement after the weekend.”

Of course the question is now, who will replace Last and be the man tasked keeping the club alive in the Betfred Super League.

The likes of Daryl Powell have been mentioned by some including many Cas fans with them hoping their best ever coach will return to save them.

But one coach who has also been mentioned and was mentioned when Lee Radford parted company with the club earlier this year.

This is former Castleford man and Leeds Rhinos Grand Final winner Danny Ward has been mentioned after his heroics with London Broncos in 2018 and nearly in 2019.

Former official Ian Smith believes this is the avenue they have to go.

He said on social media: “Got to be Danny Ward for me, I felt he should have got it last time around.”
