Former Super League and NRL centre makes decision on 2025

Former Super League and NRL centre Dean Whare has made a decision on playing future ahead of the 2025 season.

Whare, who spent two seasons in Super League with Catalans Dragons before signing with London Broncos in the Championship has opted to play on in 2025.

That’s been confirmed by New South Wales-based side Glebe Dirty Reds who have confirmed that the former New Zealand international will represent them again in 2025.

Whare, who turns 35 in January, signed for Pia Donkeys following his London Broncos exit before returning Down Under to sign with the Dirty Reds.

Glebe play in the Ron Massey Cup and won the competition in 2024, despite placing fourth on the season. Their play-off run culminated in them defeating Wentworthville Magpies 19-6 with another former Super League man starring on that day as David Nofoaluma bagged a brace.

Whare played half-back for the Dirty Reds and could do so again in 2025 after it was confirmed on social media that he had re-signed.

Glebe took to X, formerly Twitter, to share the news – stating: “The Glebe Dirty Reds are thrilled to announce that Dean Whare has re-signed with the club for a 2nd straight season!

“Dean’s mid-season signing was pivotal in what would ultimately turn out to be a premiership winning season in 2024. Here’s hoping we can go back-to-back in 2025!”

He’s certainly a quality player to have in that competition, particularly considering that he was representing Catalans in the Grand Final in 2021.

Whare scored six tries during his 36 Super League appearances before stepping down to the Championship where he scored an impressive 12 in 13 for London Broncos.

Despite the club earning promotion that season, Whare opted to move to the French Elite One division with Pia Donkeys as opposed to making the return to Super League.

Prior to his move to Catalans, Whare had been a standout centre in the NRL with the former Kiwi international representing Penrith Panthers 130 times after having initially started his career with Manly Sea Eagles.

Having fallen out of favour at Penrith, he made the switch to Super League in February of 2021 – ultimately spending two seasons with Catalans. He’s now set for season two with Glebe in the Ron Massey Cup.
