A former St Helens playmaker has signed with a new club on the eve of the 2025 season having impressed in early Challenge Cup action.
League One outfit Swinton Lions have announced that they have signed former St Helens man Dan Moss for the 2025 season with Moss ‘given an opportunity’ at the club.
The Lions suffered relegation from the Championship in 2024 as they lost the play-off tie against League One’s play-off winners Hunslet.
Since then, Swinton have seen their head coach and several key figures including ex-Salford man Rhys Williams as they look to rebuild in League One.
They’ve now announced two new signings with former Saint Moss being one and Ireland Under 19 international Tom Ashurst being the second.
The Lions aren’t in Challenge Cup action this weekend after being knocked out at the Round Two stage by Whitehaven, however, they’ll start their 1895 Cup campaign next weekend against Rochdale Hornets.
That game will be a chance for both Moss and Ashurst to potentially make their debut for the club.
Moss spent the 2024 season with North Wales Crusaders having left St Helens at the end of the 2023 season. He had initially joined the Super League side from amateur club Blackbrook, who he had joined again for 2025.
He made just two appearances for St Helens, featuring in April and August of their 2022 Grand Final winning season. He did trial with Bradford Bulls ahead of the 2-24 season before joining North Wales.
The 22-year-old played in both of Blackbrook’s Challenge Cup ties this season but has now taken an opportunity with League One side Swinton. The club announced his signing via X.
They posted: “Former Saint Dan Moss given opportunity at Lions.
“Dan Moss arrives with a strong pedigree, having come through the St Helens system where he made an early impact at Super League level with a Man of the Match performance at half-back against Castleford Tigers.”
As for Ashurst, they posted: “Tom Ashurst becomes latest Lions’ recruit.
“Tom is a 19 years-old promising young talent who has represented Ireland at under U19s level as well as gaining valuable experience with Leigh Leopards reserves.”
Swinton will begin their League One campaign on February 23rd when they host Whitehaven, the side who beat them 24-12 in the Challenge Cup last month.
