Former St Helens man Luke Thompson reflects on captaining Canterbury Bulldogs hinting he’d like to stay

There’s been speculation shrouding the solid performances of Luke Thompson at Canterbury for a year now.

The rumours reached a new zenith over the off-season with Thompson initially refusing the Covid-19 vaccine. When this was resolved, there was talk that the Bulldogs still wanted to offload him to free up salary cap space.

There has been reported interest from the high-flying Melbourne Storm as well as back home in Super League, but Thompson still remains a Bulldog and is having a very good season which reached a high point on Saturday as the Bulldogs shocked one of the top teams in the league in the shape of Sydney Roosters 16-12.

What made this even better for Thompson was the fact he captained the side alongside Josh Addo-Carr and after the game he spoke to the Bulldogs’ official YouTube channel about what an honour it was to wear the captain’s armband hinting that he’d like to stay despite the constant rumours of an exit.

“An absolute honour,” Thompson said of being named captained for the game, “I’m real proud to play for this club and to lead the boys tonight it means a lot to me.

“Every time I but this shirt on I give 110%.”

So, it seems Thompson is more than settled at Canterbury and echoed his comments on Instagram saying: “What an honour to lead the team out yesterday with this lad [Addo-Carr], a night I’ll always remember. What a win! #proudtobeabulldog.”

Perhaps then the rumours linking him with a move away will begin to subside with Thompson proud to be a Bulldog.
