Former St Helens and Salford Red Devils hooker Joey Lussick has retired from rugby league at the age of 30.
The decision comes following his release by NRL side Parramatta Eels at the end of the 2025 campaign. It brings an end to a career that has spanned nine seasons at the top level with his time in the game being split between the NRL and Super League.
Lussick made his senior debut with Manly Sea Eagles back in 2017, but he made just one appearances for the club before moving to England and joining the Red Devils in 2018, just in time to compete in the Super 8s qualifies.
The hooker’s first full season in Super League came in 2019 and he made 34 appearances across the campaign as Ian Watson’s Salford defied the odds and made it all the way to the Grand Final. He scored 13 tries that year including an effort in the play-off semi-final win over Wigan Warriors.
He returned down under after the 2020 Covid season and signed for Parramatta Eels but he made just nine appearances before the move back to Super League beckoned with St Helens.
He impressed in the Red V and helped Kristian Woolf’s outfit win their fourth straight Grand Final in 2022 before being part of the Saints side that saw off Penrith Panthers in the World Club Challenge back in February 2023.
Ultimately, he scored 11 tries in 52 appearances over two years in Merseyside before returning to the Eels in July 2023.
Lussick went on to make another 27 outings for the Eels before his release and eventual retirement.
“Rugby League… It’s been an absolute pleasure,” he wrote on Instagram, confirming his decision to step away from the game, alongside a number of reminiscent images.
