Former Sky Sports commentator Stevo says Super League club are ‘doomed’

Super League

With the Super League season about to break for the second time in a month, teams will have another chance to pause and assess their season so far. The season is now well past halfway and most sides have a clear picture of what they need to do to achieve their goals in the second half of the season.

For the sides at the bottom of the table, the break offers an opportunity to potentially strengthen their playing squad, as they attempt to avoid Super League’s dreaded wooden spoon. Both Castleford Tigers and Hull FC performed creditably in defeat this weekend. The London Broncos suffered a heavy defeat against Wigan and remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

With relegation no longer deciced entirely on the field, some of the peril of finishing bottom of the season has been removed, as it appears almost certain that London will be replaced in Super League, regardless of their final league position.

Now, former Sky Sports commentator and Great Britain international, Mike Stephenson, aka Stevo, has stated his belief that one Super League club is doomed.

The Broncos have managed just one win this season, against fellow strugglers, Hull FC. They are suffering from their decision to stick largely to the group of part-time players which won them promotion. This decision was motivated, in part, by the widely held understanding that they would be relegated whatever happens, due to their IMG Grading.

Speaking on the Eddie and Stevo podcast, Stevo explained that believes that other Super League sides are taking advantage of the weakness in London’s squad. He said:

“Yeah they certainly were and it’s once again and we keep mentioning it’s a shame that with the points system, they’ve got no chance of staying in the Super League. They know that they’re doomed.

“Apart from the fact that, they never had a chance to be able to recruit [the] highest standard players. They’re trying their best, Eddie. They’re giving it all. You can’t ask for anything anything more. It’s difficult against these top sides who have far more experience, got speed, got strength, their defences are solid.

“London will defend for quite some time but they seem to just not have that same defence out wide. That’s where the opposition are taking full advantage. Stevo said, before concluding.

“You’ve got to feel for the coach and the players themselves.”

He added that he believes the club deserves to know which division they will be playing in as soon as possible. He also believes it is a contradiction for IMG to state their desire for a London ased club, only to doom them to relegation before the first whistle.

“I can remember when [IMG] said straight away, we definitely need to have a team in London. We definitely, and I’m going, yeah, great. And then within a couple of months, they’re doomed. The Broncos are doomed.”
