Former PNG international re-signs with Championship club after high-scoring campaign

Championship side Doncaster have strengthened their attacking options after re-signing their top try scorer from the 2025 season.

Edene Gebbie will continue to represent the South Yorkshire outfit in 2026, after penning a two-year deal with the club.

A scorer of 25 tries across the regular season, the 30-year-old was only behind York Knights veteran Ben Jones-Bishop in the charts, highlighting his importance to the side.

Gebbie joined the Dons ahead of 2025 from Cumbrian side Whitehaven, where he scored 10 in 18 throughout 2024. He will look to continue his impressive efforts, as he commits to Richard Horne’s side until the end of 2027 at least.

A former Papua New Guinean international. the winger represented his nation three times in 2019, scoring once in defeat to Fiji. He was also part of the Kumuls side that defeated Great Britain in their tour of the Southern Hemisphere that year.

Commenting on his new deal, Gebbie is now one of the first names on the Dons’ team sheet, and has fully settled into life at his new club.

He said: “Last year I came in and I was struggling at first in the first few games but things changed and I did well so they have asked me to come back. It was a good season for me and I am happy to be here.

“I have been happy to see some more good players coming in and I think we can do well this season. I think we will make the finals this year.”

After finishing eighth in the Championship last season, reaching the play-offs is a goal that whole squad has been confident in saying that they will achieve, and with new recruits such as Tom Holmes, Muizz Mustapha and Cory Aston, it’s hard to back against them.

Head coach Horne also gave his thoughts on the winger’s new contract, saying: “We’re delighted to have Gebbie back with us for the new season.

“He made a massive impact last season, particularly with his try scoring and we think he can produce even more this year with the players we’ve added to the group.

“He’s an exciting player and it’s a great bit of business for us to keep him with us in the longer term.”
