Former official has stern response to Super League fans complaining about key decisions

We had a brilliant weekend of action in the Betfred Super League which concluded yesterday with two huge games as Leeds Rhinos and Hull FC claimed vital wins with the Black and Whites triumphing in the Hull derby against Hull KR. Meanwhile, Wigan Warriors were stunned by Wakefield Trinity and Warrington Wolves and St Helens served up a cracker on Friday night.

However, something that has taken the gloss off a brilliant weekend of rugby league is a focus on officials especially after the game between Leeds and Salford Red Devils.

Salford fans vented their frustrations on social media and Paul Rowley wasn’t best pleased either.

He said:

“It was difficult to watch. I think we took big steps forwards in terms of performance and it was good game to watch in some respects,” he said on BBC Radio Manchester.

“I thought there were some really big inconsistencies in officiating but for both sides I will say.

“So it is not bitterness in defeat. So, it was very frustrating and I know Rohan was as well so yeah it was a tough loss but we will take a lot of positives out of.

“I am not a coach who accepts mediocracy so there is definitely some steps forward.”

As Salford fans vented their frustrations, one supporter tried to get Ian Smith involved looking at what the fan felt was an incorrect decision.

However, Ian Smith had a stern response for the fan:

“I try to defend or put some rationale to refs decisions because I know how hard a job it is, being called gimps doesn’t help recruitment.

“Have you seen how many full time refs have lost or left their role in the last few years, they are always worried about losing their jobs and surprise surprise not many seem to want to take it up. They are under constant pressure.”
Having lost some top officials, it is vitally important that we support officials and also find a way of recruiting more.
