Former Leigh man Tom Amone responds to Hull KR, Warrington and Leopards’ return reports

- 05/10/2024 - Rugby League - Betfred Super League Semi Final - Wigan Warriors v Leigh Leopards - The Brick Community Stadium, Wigan, England - Leigh's Tom Amone dejected after his side's loss to Wigan.

Former Leigh Leopards forward Tom Amone has responded to reports linking him with a return to Super League.

Amone left Super League at the end of the 2024 campaign with many, including new employer Gus Gould at Canterbury Bulldogs, arguing that he was the best prop in the competition and it would be hard to disagree with that.

The ex-NRL man earned Dream Team honours and Leigh’s play-off charge coincided with the dominant spell he put together in the second-half of the season, a run of form worthy of an NRL move.

Despite that, he’s yet to find success with his new club the Bulldogs with Amone spending his time playing in the New South Wales Cup and that has led to numerous reports that he could be primed for a return to Super League.

Leigh Leopards, who didn’t truly replace Amone, have been named as one possible destination whilst recent reports have thrown both Warrington Wolves and even Hull KR into the mix, albeit with the Robins looking at a 2026 move.

With so much conjecture, it’s hard to know what the reality is but Amone has now spoken on his future in an interview with Zero Tackle with the 29-year-old responding firmly to the reports of a Super League return, be it with Leigh Leopards or another side.

The prop explained: “I’ve got a job now. I’m here at the Bulldogs, so I just want to focus on that and make sure I’m putting my best foot forward and try to adapt as quickly as I can.”

Amone, who would often play long minutes for Leigh, has been limited to an average of just under 30 minutes per game in the NSW Cup, however, he’s still got through plenty of work making almost 17 tackles and over 70 metres per his half-hour stints.

Despite that, he’s not been able to crack into the NRL side with the Bulldogs currently atop the table as the only unbeaten team.

On his future, he added: “I’ll just leave it to my manager. I know there has been speculation, but right now, I’m focused on the Bulldogs.

“I don’t really look at the speculation, and I just leave it to the side.”
