Former Leeds Rhinos and Hull KR star retires from rugby league

Leeds Rhinos Mitch Garbutt

Former Leeds Rhinos and Hull KR forward Mitch Garbutt has confirmed that he is “officially retired from Rugby League” with the 35-year-old calling time on his twelve-year playing career.

The Australian forward played in Super League for eight seasons representing Leeds Rhinos, Hull KR and Toulouse Olympique during the club’s sole campaign in the top flight.

Garbutt then continued his career in France with a move to Saint-Gaudens Bears who play in the Elite One Championship with the Australian taking on a player-coach role.

In his first season in England, Garbutt lifted the Grand Final with Leeds Rhinos and was also a member of the squad that lifted the club’s last Grand Final in 2017.

His four-year stay at Headingley ended in 2018 with Garbutt then signing for Hull KR in 2019 before his move to join Toulouse in 2021 whom he helped secure promotion to Super League, before then playing eight games in 2022 back in the top flight.

Garbutt finished his career with 96 Super League appearances but won two Grand Finals and a Challenge Cup during that time as well as becoming a fan favourite.

For the 2025 season, he will join SO Avignon as a head coach, something that was confirmed back in May.
