Former Lance Todd Trophy winner, Tony Gigot, makes surprising switch as he confirms his future

Frenchman Tony Gigot has been one of the big names this off-season that was unsigned, having left Toulouse at the end of the 2022 campaign, but it’s been announced today that he’s signed with Elite One side Albi in France.

Gigot has played for multiple sides in his beloved home nation across his career with Toulouse the most recent, prior to this move, in a long line of clubs including Catalans Dragons and his home club of Avignon.

He now joins the Elite One which is the premier division in French rugby league as he links up with Albi for the rest of the season.

The French season starts prior to the English one and as such he joins with Albi sitting in fourth place having won six of their ten games so far.

Gigot’s future was uncertain as he focused on the World Cup as opposed to arranging his domestic future and as such it led to speculation regarding where he would go.

A return to Catalans, who he led to Challenge Cup victory and won Man of the Match in the final, was suggested, as was a drop down to the Championship in the same vein as former Man of Steel Luke Gale.

However, Gigot has signed with another French side and will join a whole host of talent in the top flight in France including former Super League stars like Morgan Escare and James Maloney.

The news was confirmed by Albi themselves who made the announcement via their Twitter page.

The tweet reads: “Tony Gigot is committed to Albi Rugby League. Having just turned 32 he brings all his experience to our team. Welcome Tony. Come on Tigers!”
