Former Hull FC powerhouse Manu Ma’u has found a new club after his exit from Catalans Dragons at the end of the 2024 season.
Ma’u made the move to Super League for the 2020 season, signing with Hull FC and helping them to the play-offs that year, the last time that the Black and Whites have played in the post-season.
His 2021 campaign was stronger personally as he played 20 games but the club missed the play-offs, something that they’d do once again in 2023.
What followed was a move to Catalans Dragons and despite making 20 appearances in 2023, including in the Grand Final against Wigan, Ma’u would not play again for the club as he failed to make a single appearance in the 2024 season.
He was one of eight to exit the French side at the end of the season alongside fellow overseas recruits Matt Ikuvalu and Jarrod Wallace. Whilst Wallace would soon confirm his retirement, it seems that Ma’u is set to play on aged 36 with one club confirming his arrival for the 2025 season.
Former Hull FC man signs to play under ex-Cas star
Souths Sharks have announced that the ex-Hull FC forward Manu Ma’u has signed with them for the 2025 season but Ma’u is not the only familiar name at the club.
Former Castleford Tigers forward Kenny Edwards has also joined the team for the upcoming season but as an assistant coach. Edwards called time on his Super League career at the end of the 2023 season, leaving Castleford Tigers after over 50 games with the side.
That came after he had briefly signed a deal with Mackay Cutters before officially confirming his retirement in April this year.
He will now be in charge of coaching Ma’u who is looking to play his first rugby league since that 2023 Grand Final.
Announcing the signing, South Sharks took to Facebook to say: “Welcome Manu and his family to the Sharks family. Manu is coming to us after spending time in the Super League with the Catalans Dragons and Hull F.C. He has played at the highest level, representing Tonga and New Zealand and also played with Parramatta Eels in NRL. We are excited to have him onboard.”
