Former Hull FC pair both handed mammoth bans after pre-season clash

Red card Super League disciplinary

Two former Hull FC players have been handed mammoth bans after an altercation between them earlier this month.

Featherstone Rovers’ Connor Wynne and Goole Vikings’ Jeylan Hodgson have both been banned for six matches following their Grade E charges which were heard at an RFL tribunal.

Wynee and Hodgson, both formerly of Hull FC, were among five players sent to the tribunal although the RFL have only confirmed that just three appeared on Tuesday night.

A whopping 12 players were handed charges for their actions in pre-season games and the opening rounds of the Challenge Cup but just one of those 12 was given an immediate ban.

That man was Keighley Cougars’ Mark Ioane who was handed a Grade D charge for ‘Dangerous Contact’ and that elicited a two-match ban.

After last night’s Operational Rules Tribunal, a further three players have been banned including the former Hull FC pair of Wynne and Hodgson.

The disciplinary system has changed for 2025 although it is currently under review.

Ex-Hull FC pair handed six-game bans

The incident between Wynne and Hodgson came in the pre-season friendly between Featherstone Rovers and Goole Vikings with Wynne alleging that Hodgson bit him which in turn saw him respond with a punch.

Both men were then charged with biting and punching respectively, of which they were both banned for six games.

Hodgson pleaded not guilty but was found guilty of the charges whilst Wynne did plead guilty to punching. The other man at the tribunal was Josh Thompson of York Acorn who pled guilty to Other Contrary Behaviour, something that saw him land a four-match ban.

The full RFL statement read: “Three players appeared at independent Operational Rules Tribunals on January 28 following incidents in pre-season and Betfred Challenge Cup fixtures, with the following results.

“Connor Wynne of Featherstone Rovers was suspended for six matches, and fined £250, after pleading guilty to a Grade E charge of punching in a pre-season fixture against Goole Vikings on January 14.

“Jeylan Hodgson of Goole Vikings was found guilty of a Grade E charge of biting in the same fixture – the tribunal rejecting his not guilty plea. Hodgson was also suspended for six matches, and fined £75.

“Josh Thompson of York Acorn was suspended for four matches after pleading guilty to a Grade E charge of Other Contrary Behaviour in a Betfred Challenge Cup tie against GB Police on January 19.”

Why don’t top clubs get same punishment if not more. Top clubs are FULL TIME, SHOULD TRAIN BETTER,GET PAID MORE and usually get less severe punishment. Disciplinary panel are a joke.
