Former Hull FC man signs with new club after Super League release

Hull FC

Former Hull FC forward Nick Staveley has found a new club, following his release from Castleford Tigers.

The 21-year-old will now join up with Championship side Sheffield Eagles after an unsuccessful trial with the Tigers.

Staveley moved to Castleford after leaving Hull FC just a couple of weeks ago.

He was released from the Tigers due to being unable to participate in first-team training as he recovers from injury.

The forward has not played a competitive game of rugby for nearly a year after rupturing his ACL and only has six Super League appearances under his belt.

This move to Sheffield is an opportunity for Staveley to get back to match fitness and with the deal running until the end of the 2026 season, he could help the Eagles work towards a Super League promotion.

He has previous Championship experience, spending a lot of the 2023 season on loan with Newcastle Thunder, where he made 13 appearances.

Sheffield head coach Craig Lingard was excited to see his potential in the Championship following

He said: “I’m really pleased to get him in, he’s another body we needed to get in.

“He’s had a season out with an ACL injury which he got whilst he was at Hull, but he was getting a run of games in their side at the start of last season, and I’m excited to see what he can bring to us.”

Staveley has played at both prop and in the second row, adding to his versatility in the forward pack.

The Eagles recently lost veteran back Ben Jones-Bishop after he re-signed to York Knights following a three-year stint with the South Yorkshire side.

Staveley joins former Hull FC teammates Morgan Smith and Jack Walker, who joined the Eagles this season.

Sheffield next face Oldham RLFC in the Championship on Sunday 30th March, with Staveley hoping to make his Eagles debut as soon as his injury heals.
