Former Hull FC man Scott Taylor on ‘proud day’ after Goole Vikings’ historic Challenge Cup win

Former Hull FC man Scott Taylor has spoken on his pride after coaching Goole Vikings to a historic Challenge Cup win over London Broncos.

Goole are the most recent club to join the professional ranks with the Vikings set to feature in League One in 2025 and they have already proved that they will shock quite a few teams.

That comes after their shock 17-10 win over London Broncos in the Challenge Cup yesterday with Goole now booking their place in the third round, where they will face Wakefield Trinity.

Having just defeated a side who were relegated from Super League in 2024, the Vikings will fancy their chances at home against a team that have just been promoted to Super League.

Goole are led by former Hull FC star Scott Taylor with the ex-England forward having used his connections to the Airlie Birds to recruit a number of former players.

Among those ex-Hull FC players are plenty of youngsters but also full-back Jamie Shaul who has come out of retirement to play for his old teammate.

Speaking to club media after the historic win, Taylor said: “It’s a really proud day for everyone associated with the club and the town, and a reward for all the hard work that has gone into the club on and off the field over the last few months.”

Whilst London have lost plenty of their squad from last season, they are still a strong outfit and have one of the sport’s most respected coaches in Mike Eccles.

Goole’s road win was therefore a massive result, something that Taylor noted: “To come away with a win like that against a side that played in Super League last season was fantastic, and brilliant for everyone involved. We couldn’t be more proud of the boys.

“It is really pleasing to come from behind in the way we did—it’s a testament to the character of the boys.

“They all really stepped up to the plate and gave it their all. Every player put in a performance today and did the badge proud. It was a genuine team effort all around.”

Goole were founded just a few years ago as an amateur side and that support base seems to have carried over into the professional ranks with Taylor hailing the effort of those who travelled down to Rosslyn Park.

“It was great to see the fans come down from Goole—it’s fantastic support for a new club,” he explained.

“That wasn’t lost on the staff and the players either. It’s really appreciated by everyone.”

With the game broadcast by the BBC, plenty who did not make the trip were also able to revel in the success, although Taylor is hoping that they will turn out to support them against Wakefield Trinity in Round Three of the Challenge Cup.

He said: “To hear about all the fans back home tuning in too, it’s just great for the club and the town—hopefully, we made them proud. Fingers crossed, we get a few down to watch us play our home games.”
