Former Hull FC man reacts to reported Jordan Abdull release and Marc Sneyd links

A former Hull FC player has given his thoughts on the reported release of Jordan Abdull as well as links with Salford Red Devils’ Marc Sneyd.

Abdull was one of 10 signings that Hull FC made heading into the upcoming season but it seems just eight days into 2025 that his return to the MKM Stadium has been cut short.

According to a Hull Live report, the half-back has left the club – cutting short a return to his boyhood side. It’s unclear as yet to the details behind the exit with no official confirmation from the Black and Whites.

BBC Humberside claimed to have verified the reports and they spoke with former Hull FC player Alan Hunte on the situation with the 54-year-old offering forward his verdict.

“It’s disappointing,” Hunte told BBC Radio Humberside.

“Coming back to Hull you would hope that he could realise some things that he didn’t get to the first time around but with all that said, having raised the bar so high he has also had the problems of staying fit.

“I think there were a lot of questions that you hoped he could put right in a Black and White shirt because the talent is undoubtedly there. I’m sure all Hull fans are really disappointed that that won’t come to fruition.”

Short of just expressing disappointment that the return of Abdull has seemingly ended badly, Hunte also called for further information on the situation – namely if other factors are at play.

Hunte stated: “I think we need to know why. Is this down to the club or is this down to Jordan Abdull? There could be other factors such as family or circumstance, whatever that may be.

“Obviously having signed for the club and now leaving, there (must) have been some negotiations between the two parties as to how they finish this and under what circumstances.”

Despite that, he was clear that whilst Abdull’s exit marks a major negative for the Black and Whites, it isn’t as bad as it could have been.

He explained: “It’s got to be a negative outcome when you sign a player and he doesn’t play for you but it has not been danced out in public and dragged through the mud. They’ve been grown up about it I’m presuming in how, when and what happens with this release.

“Now Hull have to find a replacement and put it to bed because it’s an unfortunate opening chapter in the 2025 season.”

As it stands, it would seem that new signing Cade Cust or young talent Jack Charles will step into the role that Abdull had been set to play, however, further reports from Hull Live linked Salford’s Marc Sneyd with a return to FC.

Reacting to those reports, Hunte expressed concern as he stated: “It wouldn’t surprise me but I would hope that for the integrity of rugby league that they’re not (connected).

“I would hope that the club hasn’t ditched Jordan because (they’ve heard) on the grapevine that they think Marc Sneyd is available or vice versa.

“Marc Sneyd signed a new contract at Salford and I think that he should honour that but that is just my own personal belief.”

One thing that he maintained was that if Hull FC have released Jordan Abdull then they should be aiming to bring in a replacement of the same or a better level, something that could prove difficult at this stage of the season.

“If the two stories are connected then you’re exchanging a starter for a starter because they are two top-quality half-backs alongside Aidan Sezer,” Hunte argued.

“I wouldn’t foresee all three players being at the same club unless a coach had different ideas on what positions those players play.

“You want a like-for-like or better. Some would say Marc Sneyd is like-for-like, and some would say he is better. I have no doubt some Hull fans would say ‘Been there, done that and got the t-shirt’ regarding Marc Sneyd.”
