A former Hull FC player has left his current Super League club to step away from the sport after a series of serious health issues.
Andre Savelio left Hull FC to sign for Huddersfield Giants at the start of the 2024 season but after playing just a handful of games in 2024, it’s been confirmed that the forward will take some time away from the sport.
Savelio would play just nine times for the Giants in 2024 with injuries and suspension marring his season at the John Smiths Stadium and he’s now had his contract cut short.
That is a mutual decision between both the player and the club with Savelio making a statement via the club about his health and the decision to step away.
“Huddersfield Giants can confirm that Andre Savelio will leave the club,” a statement on the club’s site confirmed.
“Andre will step away from Full-Time Rugby League with immediate effect, following discussions with specialists, the player is taking time to focus on his health and assess his options going forward.
It was also confirmed that his contract had been ended to allow him time to ‘step away from full-time rugby league’ with Savelio giving his own verdict.
The former Hull FC man said: “I’m really thankful to Ken, Luke Robinson and Richard Thewlis for facilitating this and looking after me during my toughest year so far in Rugby League.
“The move is on good terms, and I’m going to take some time to look after my personal health, and reassess what my options are moving forward.”
Giants Managing Director Richard Thewlis commented, “I’m sure this would have been a difficult decision for Andre to arrive at but it’s one we‘ve supported him in and wish him every success in the future.”
Prior to his move to Huddersfield Giants, Savelio had spent five seasons with Hull FC after initially debuting for St Helens back in 2014.
Across his decade-long playing career, he would make 127 appearances in Super League but aged 29, he now steps away. Everyone at Serious About Rugby League wishes Andre the best in his next steps as he focuses on his health and wellbeing.
