NRL side Wests Tigers have announced the appointment of former Hull FC coach Brett Hodgson as their new assistant coach. Hodgson has penned a two-year deal with the Tigers to work under head coach Benji Marshall, who couldn’t prevent the club from finishing bottom of the table this year.
Hodgson is a Wests legend having won an NRL Grand Final with the Tigers as a player, while has spent time at the club as an assistant coach previously, too. He’ll be looking to help Marshall turn the club around in 2025, though, with pre-season due to get underway at the start of November.
The Australian, who represented Huddersfield Giants and Warrington Wolves in Super League during his playing days, struggled for traction while in charge of Hull, leading the club to 8th and 9th placed finishes in Super League before leaving East Yorkshire by mutual consent in 2022.
He has since worked under rugby union coach Eddie Jones with both England and Australia, but his move to Wests represents a return to the 13-man code.
“I’m very excited to be working with Benji and the coaching staff to deliver a high-performance program,” said Hodgson.
“We have an outstanding group of young, talented players, and the squad will be strengthened with the addition of some high-quality new signings. I’m looking forward to contributing as we build a successful future for this great club.”
Speaking of his latest backroom addition, Marshall added: “Brett has experience both as a head coach and an assistant coach, across both codes, and he will be a great addition to our coaching team.
“He is honest, hardworking, and has a great knowledge and feel for the game.”
Hodgson made 103 appearances for Wests as a player, scoring 39 tries and kicking 318 goals. He made six State of Origin appearances for New South Wales, too.
