Former Hull FC and Castleford Tigers halfback to continue playing at 38 years old

Sheffield Eagles have made a couple of major moves as they prepare for the 2024 season including keeping on former Hull FC and Castleford Tigers halfback Anthony Thackeray.

The club captain has extended his stay at the club by a further season which will take him well beyond his current tally of 53 appearances for the club since joining from Featherstone Rovers.

Crucially, the club have also secured the services of fellow halfback Izaac Farrell for next year as well.

Farrell signed for the Eagles before the cancelled 2020 season and played a major part in his first two seasons with the South Yorkshire club before he suffered an ACL injury in August 2022.

The 25-year-old returned to action in this season’s Summer Bash victory over Newcastle Thunder, and also spent time with Midlands Hurricanes on dual-registration in 2023.

Director of Rugby Mark Aston said: “We’re delighted to have Izaac signed up for 2024. He’s still a relatively young player, with huge amounts of potential to unlock.

“He wears his heart on his sleeve and plays with a passion that we love working with.

“The challenge for Izaac is to establish himself as one of the first-team starters again next season.

“We know the sky is the limit for Izaac and we’re looking forward to seeing him in the red and gold next season”.

This comes as they also announced the permanent signing of James Glover from York Knights on a two-year deal.

Glover had initially signed for the Eagles – for his second stint in South Yorkshire – on loan midway through the 2023 season.

After a number of impressive outings, Director of Rugby Mark Aston acted fast to tie him down to a permanent deal.

“It’s great that we have been able to keep James in the Steel City on a permanent basis,” said Aston.

“He was outstanding for ourselves in his first stint and his 100% attitude was clear to see in the final months of the 2023 campaign.

“We’re looking forward to seeing how he’ll continue to improve and add to our push to maintaining the playoff spot we achieved this year.”

The Eagles could be set for a big year in 2024.
