Former Huddersfield Giants boss gets new coaching gig for 2023

Rick Stone arrived in Huddersfield in 2016 as replacement for former boss Paul Anderson.

He had big shoes to fill at the John Smith’s Stadium after Anderson had led the Giants to the League Leaders’ Shield in his first season in charge back in 2013 as well as semi-final appearances in 2014 and 2015 prior to a poor start to the 2016 season which saw the Giants move in a different direction.

His first full campaign came in 2017 and saw the Giants finish inside the vital top eight and participate in the Super 8s avoiding a relegation shootout in the Middle 8s.

However, a difficult run in the Super 8s saw the Giants consigned to just 11 wins throughout the Super League season in total.

A difficult start to the 2018 campaign however saw Stone leave the club.

Since then he has worked with Sydney Roosters women as well as Burleigh Bears whilst prior to his move to Huddersfield he spent time in an NRL hotseat bossing the Newcastle Knights.

He took over from Brian Smith in 2009 but returned to assistant in 2012 when Wayne Bennett arrived at the club but would again stand to replace the Head Coach in 2015 prior to moving to West Yorkshire.

He also spent time as Fiji Head Coach.

Now he is taking on a new venture according to the Newcastle Herald with Newcastle Rugby League club Western Suburbs who had been recently looking for a new coach.

Back in familiar surroundings, he will be hoping for success.
