Former Catalans Dragons and Wakefield Trinity forward secures NRL move

Super League forward Zac Lipowicz has secured a move to the NRL, signing a one-year development contract with the newly established Perth Bears ahead of their inaugural 2027 campaign.

Lipowicz featured prominently in the English top flight during the 2026 season, making 25 appearances and scoring six tries for Catalans Dragons before making a late switch to Wakefield Trinity.

Prior to his time in Europe, the 24-year-old edge back-rower developed through the Penrith Panthers pathway system.

In a unique journey to the professional ranks, Lipowicz previously balanced a full-time career as a carpenter with reserve-grade football before earning his NRL debut for the Panthers in 2025. He has also represented Poland on the international stage.

Speaking on the signing, Perth Bears head coach Mal Meninga highlighted the player’s background and resilience.

“Zac Lipowicz’s story speaks for itself.

“Not many blokes go from working full days on the tools to playing first grade and Test football,” Meninga said.

“We think he’ll fit straight into the standards we’re building here.”

Reflecting on his return to the Australian system, Lipowicz expressed his appreciation for the opportunity.

“I’m just grateful for the chance to be part of this squad. I want to come in, learn from the group, and do whatever I can to help the team,” Lipowicz said.

Lipowicz joins playmaker Zac Herdegen as the newest additions to the Bears’ development list, with the club locking in five of its six available development spots as they assemble their squad for a history-making entry into the competition.
