The final month of the regular season is fast approaching and there’s still so much to play for in Super League. There’s a three-way battle raging at the top of division as Hull KR, Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves compete to get their hands on the League Leaders’ Shield.
Below the top three, though, five teams still have hope of claiming a spot in the Super League play-offs. Of course, only three spots are available, but with four games to go, Leeds Rhinos and Leigh Leopards have hope of gate-crashing the top six, while St Helens, Catalans Dragons and Salford Red Devils will be doing all they can to hold onto their play-off positions.
It makes for an interesting final few weeks with most games still having something riding on the result. As the regular season draws in, though, we’ve got our crystal ball out, put our necks on the line and made five bold predictions about the next few weeks. Here goes…
Leeds Rhinos to get top six
Leeds aren’t exactly firing on all cylinders just yet under Brad Arthur, but they’ve glimpses with wins coming over Wigan Warriors and Catalans Dragons over the last few weeks. Those results have been enough to carry Leeds to the brink of the top six and with four games remaining they sit just two points back.
Now, with the greatest of respects to both London Broncos and Hull FC, Leeds really should be picking up maximum points over their next two games and that would certainly be enough to pile the pressure on those above them, particularly with Salford Red Devils and Catalans Dragons facing difficult fixtures.
The Rhinos end the season with trips to title contenders Wigan Warriors and Hull KR, but with the pair going head to head in round 25 to seemingly decide the League Leaders’ Shield, Leeds might just be able to catch the loser at the right time.
London Broncos to climb off the bottom
London know the likelihood is that they won’t be playing Super League next season and so they’ll be determined to go out swinging by claiming another scalp and asking more questions of IMG’s grading system. The Broncos have only picked up three wins this season, with two coming against Hull FC, but they know they can rattle a few cages and as the season winds down there could be opportunities for them.
They host Leeds Rhinos on Sunday before ending the season with away days at Huddersfield Giants, Catalans Dragons and Warrington Wolves. A win for the Broncos in any of those fixtures seems unlikely on paper, but you never know.
Mikey Lewis for Super League Man of Steel
There’s no doubt about it, the likes of Marc Sneyd and Matt Dufty have been stars of the season so far and their performances across the campaign ensure they are candidates to get their hands on the coveted Man of Steel award.
However, there’s an argument to be made that Mikey Lewis has been the most influential player this season and his displays have helped KR to the summit of the division. Lewis is finishing the regular season in red hot form and over the remaining four games, he’s bound to play a key role for the Robins.
With 15 tries and 21 assists to his name, he has been one of Super League’s most lethal players and it would not be a surprise he was recognised as such.
St Helens to come good
Saints are in a tricky spot as they enter the final few weeks of the season. Paul Wellens’ side have seen injuries pile up once more and with four games remaining, they are perched on the edge of the play-offs, just one point above Leigh Leopards.
They’ve made a habit of losing the big games, too, with defeats to Wigan Warriors and Hull KR coming over the last fortnight. If there’s one thing St Helens know, though, it’s how to play at the back end of the season when the chips are down.
Saints face trips to Huddersfield, Warrington and Leigh over their final four games, with a home game against Castleford Tigers wedged in as their penultimate fixture. As such, they’ll be tested but there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be targeting maximum points over the remaining four fixtures and Saints will always prove tricky opposition in the play-offs.
Hull KR to end the Super League season unbeaten
The Robins are on a seven game winning streak at present and the dominant manner of their last five results is enough to indicate they will take some stopping. They’re on a roll and while they do have a relatively tricky run-in, you’d have to be brave to bet against them lifting the League Leaders’ Shield.
Rovers take on Salford Red Devils on Friday, before travelling to the Brick Community Stadium to face Wigan in what appears to be a showdown for top spot. KR have shown no fear on the road in recent weeks, though, with one-sided wins over Warrington and St Helens enough to give them the confidence they need to land a huge psychological blow on Matt Peet’s side heading into the knockout stages.
Leigh and Leeds represent their final two opponents and they’ll fancy their chances of entering the Super League play-offs in style.
