Wigan Warriors may have scored 72 points against York Knights this afternoon, but boss Matt Peet was less than impressed with the 20 points conceded.
Scoring all their points in the first hour, the final quarter of the game would see the home side take control, and as a result they were able to score four consolation tries.
Wigan got off to an amazing start, with Sam Eseh opening the scoring inside the opening minute. The Warriors were 22-0 up after 15 minutes, and had doubled their advantage to 44 at the half-time break.
Five further tries increased the score to 72-0, with many at that point checking the history books to see whether Wigan could break some records.
However, the final 20 was far from ideal for the away side, and that was the big talking point post-match for boss Peet.
Summing up the game, he said to Sky Sports: “I’m not sure, to be honest. We got a chance to show our skill with the ball a few times and plenty of open space, but the last 20 minutes did my head in a bit.”
“…I certainly would have taken this result on the way over. It’s always got the opportunity to go in another direction.
“We got the start pretty good. But yeah, standards are going to be a bit better than that.”
Peet was asked if a hangover or fall-off has to happen at some point, given the fatigue that has gone into some of the performances and wins over the last month or so.
“I don’t think it has to,” he replied: “We’ll look after the lads in the week. We’re trying to train smart, so we’re not working too hard in the week.
“We’re proud of our performance at the weekend, but we didn’t get that right for the full 80 minutes, there.”
Asked whether the chase for top spot in the league, and a potential Old Trafford trip, is still on the cards, he replied: “Yeah, we’d love all that. We’d love all that.
“But it’s all cliché. We’ve just got to work hard this week, and Hull will be ready next week. So there’s plenty of improvement in us, I think.”
