Fifita in hospital due to serious injury

Cronulla Sharks have confirmed that Andrew Fifita has suffered an injury to his throat, following an incident early in the second half of today’s match against Newcastle.

After the match Fifita reported difficulty swallowing. He was also noted to have a hoarse voice at this time and his care was escalated to the paramedics with a suspected laryngeal injury.

He was taken via ambulance to hospital, where a significant laryngeal injury was confirmed.

Fifita remains in hospital following Cronulla’s narrow 16-14 defeat to Newcastle which left the Sharks in tenth position and with their play-off hopes fading with every passing game.

Fifita had been linked with a move to Wakefield earlier in the season but that failed to materialise, with the prop forward closing in on 200 appearances for the Sharks.

Capped seven times by Australia, the 32-year-old has been in and out of the Cronulla side this year, but under Josh Hannay, Fifita has established himself in the side.
