Featherstone sign Super League Grand Finalist

Featherstone Rovers have announced the signing of centre Kris Welham from Super League side Salford Red Devils.

Welham joins Featherstone for the 2021 season on an initial one-year deal with the option of a second year and will add a plethora of experience to the Rovers squad.

The 33-year-old became a key figure of Ian Watson’s Salford side since joining in 2017 and was part of the famous Red Devils side that exceeded all expectations by reaching the 2019 Betfred Super League Grand Final.

He becomes the second signing from Salford to Featherstone this year after Connor Jones was announced as a 2021 Featherstone player earlier this month. Rovers’ latest addition will also know the club’s Head Coach well, as the two played together at Hull KR in the early days of Welham’s career.

Rovers Head Coach James Webster said: “I have been lucky enough to have known Kris since we played together at Hull KR. His try scoring record over a career that has spanned close to 15 years shows the quality he possesses.

“Even when highlighting his fantastic try scoring record, it is his attitude and effort within the clubs that he has represented that will always be his biggest asset. He is a fantastic club man that will always play his heart out for the shirt and those that come and spend their hard-earned cash every week to watch the sport.”

Rovers Football Manager Steve Gill added: We are really pleased to have been able to add Kris to the ranks, he has been one of the top centres in the Super League for several years now.

“I’m happy with the squad we have assembled and the growing culture within it, Kris will add massively to this and his experience will be invaluable to the squad as we look to build towards something special here at Featherstone.”
