Featherstone Rovers have made yet another splash signing with a Newcastle Knights forward signing for the club, shortly after the announcement of a double coup from Wakefield Trinity.
The Flat Cappers have seen their recruitment ignite in the past 24 hours with the signing of ex-Hull FC captain Carlos Tuimavave being followed by the signings of Wakefield Trinity duo Derrell Olpherts and Toby Boothroyd.
Following in the footsteps of Boothroyd’s signing, they’ve now added another Australian second-rower with Clay Webb being recruited from NRL outfit Newcastle Knights.
It’s a signing that showcases the ambition of Featherstone Rovers who only just scraped into the Championship play-offs in 2024 following a series of campaigns where they had been challenging for the title.
Heading into James Ford’s second full season in charge, the club have recruited very strongly and look set to compete with the likes of Bradford Bulls and York Knights who have both recruited well, whilst the relegated London Broncos still pose a clear threat.
Who is Featherstone Rovers’ new signing Clay Webb?
Featherstone took to social media to announce the signing of Webb, a 22-year-old second-rower from Newcastle Knights with the Webb becoming the second Australian forward signed by Rovers today.
He follows Toby Boothroyd who had arrived at Wakefield Trinity with a similar pedigree to Webb who has played over 60 games in the New South Wales Cup, representing both Canberra and Newcastle during that period.
Webb would play 14 games for the Knights’ feeder team in 2024, scoring one try, as he featured alongside the likes of Will Pryce and even Jackson Hastings.
During the 2023 season, whilst still at Canberra, Webb was named to the New South Wales Cup Team of the Year alongside now-established NRL names such as Kayal Iro, Dean Hawkins and Zach Dockar-Clay.
Speaking on his move to join Featherstone Rovers, Webb said: “I’m made up to sign a deal with Featherstone, it’s a club with a rich history and one that’s got plenty of ambition to match my own, I can’t wait to get over to England and get started.
“I like to challenge myself and this move will do exactly that, it’ll be a completely new experience for me living in a new country with a different culture and even a different style of rugby.
“After speaking to Fordy it’s clear that Fev will suit the type of player I am, I’m ready to rip into pre-season, earn the trust of the boys and play a role in what will hopefully be a successful 2025 season.”
Ford added: “We’re excited to bring Clay to the club. I’m delighted to be putting a squad together with genuine competition for places. I’m very excited to watch these men fight for a starting spot in our team.”
“He’s tough, athletic and hungry to establish himself at this level in the UK, we’re excited to welcome him to the club and see what he adds to our side, I’m sure he’ll quickly become a hit with our loyal fans.”
