Featherstone Rovers prop Ben Mathiou finds new club on short-term deal

Featherstone Rovers prop forward Ben Mathiou has found a new club on a short-term deal.

The Australian, son of former Leeds Rhinos star Jamie Mathiou, has yet to play a game for Rovers and has instead made the short-term move to Doncaster.

He could go straight into Richard Horne’s squad for Sunday’s game against Swinton Lions in Betfred League One.

Mathiou, 26, joined the club from North Devils in the second tier of Australian rugby league.

“I’m really looking forward to being part of a successful club in the UK,” said Mathieu upon joining Featherstone.

“Being involved with Featherstone, a club that has a lot of history and has inspired me to want to be a part of the team that works hard to help the club be promoted to Super League.”

Rovers head coach Brian McDermott said upon Mathiou joining: “I played against Ben’s dad [Jamie – ex-Leeds prop], he comes with great raps, and looking at the footage there he’s going to blend into the squad.

“What it does is make it really uncomfortable for everybody in the squad about getting a shirt – this isn’t a squad with obvious choices.”
