Featherstone Rovers land deal with football club in IMG boost

Featherstone Rovers have agreed a deal with local football club Wakefield AFC to have use of their stadium for the next two seasons, ending the football club’s deal with Wakefield Trinity.

Wakefield Trinity had previously shared their ground to allow Wakefield AFC to play at Trinity’s DIY Kitchens Stadium, however, the Championship leaders have confirmed that both sides have mutually agreed to “relocate football games” for the remainder of the season.

Trinity confirmed that in a statement on their club website that explained the last football game will be played on August 24th with the decision made based on costing and maintenance.

They announced: “Wakefield AFC and Wakefield Trinity have mutually agreed to relocate football games from the DIY Kitchens Stadium for the remainder of this season.

“The stadium will host its final event for football on August 24th, 2024. This decision was driven by the increased costs required to meet the Ground Safety Certificate requirements and the planned long-term maintenance of the pitch following the rugby season.”

Owner Matt Ellis confirmed that it wasn’t a permanent end and that future collaborations could happen.

Featherstone Rovers confirm ground share

Whilst Wakefield Trinity have ended their relationship with Wakefield AFC for now, Featherstone Rovers have announced a new one with the Flat Cappers confirming a ground share for the next two seasons.

It is something that could be incredibly beneficial for Rovers as it means they could earn more points for their ‘Facilities’ pillar of the IMG grading as their stadium will be used beyond rugby league.

Featherstone Rovers confirmed the news with a statement that read: “Wakefield AFC & Featherstone Rovers sign a 2 year Stadium Lease agreement.

“Wakefield AFC and Featherstone Rovers have agreed to sign a lease agreement covering the 24/25 and 25/26 football seasons. The clubs also expanded the agreement to allow Wakefield AFC to open a club shop at the Millennium Stadium and use Featherstone Rovers training facility.”

It could also have financial boosts for Featherstone with the club having openly struggled with money of late culminating in players remaining unpaid.
