Featherstone Rovers forced to abandon pre-season friendly at half-time

Featherstone Rovers

Featherstone Rovers have been forced to abandon their pre-season friendly with Dewsbury Rams this evening. The Championship side were hosting Dewsbury at the Millennium Stadium in their second pre-season friendly of the month, but they were unable to play more than 40 minutes.

That’s because a localised power outage in Featherstone left the ground without floodlights. After a slight delay and with no clarity on when the power would be expected to return, the club were left with no choice but to abandon the contest.

The decision came with the Flat Cappers 22-0 up against their West Yorkshire neighbours. Gadwin Springer scored Featherstone’s first try of the match before efforts from Connor Wynne and Ben Reynolds. The hosts named a strong team ahead of next week’s Challenge Cup second tie and the abandonment will have come as a blow to those players on both sides who may have expected to pick up game time in the second half.

A message posted on Featherstone’s X account read: “ABANDONED – Unfortunately the match has been stopped early to due a local power outage in and around Featherstone this evening.

“With no clear timings on when power might be returned, the match has been abandoned.

“Rovers were leading 22-0 at the interval.”

Both Featherstone and Dewsbury will be Challenge Cup action next weekend with their second round opponents being confirmed today. Dewsbury can now look forward to the short trip to Dewsbury Moor, who beat Haresfinch to book their place in the next round.

Featherstone, on the other hand, will host Waterhead Warriors, who edged out Leigh Miners Rangers in golden point extra time. Fev have one more pre-season game to play before the start of their Championship campaign with Huddersfield Giants travelling to the Millennium Stadium in February.
