Featherstone Rovers announce two new signings – including Ben Mathiou – find short-term deals elsewhere

Featherstone Rovers have announced that two of their new signings will be heading out of the club on short-term deals.

Bayley Gill and Ben Mathiou have failed to make a dent in the West Yorkshire side under Brian McDermott and now the duo are heading to the Dewsbury Rams for a two-week loan period.

Rovers head coach Brian McDermott said upon Mathiou joining:Β “I played against Ben’s dad [Jamie – ex-Leeds prop], he comes with great raps, and looking at the footage there he’s going to blend into the squad.

“What it does is make it really uncomfortable for everybody in the squad about getting a shirt – this isn’t a squad with obvious choices.”

Gill, meanwhile, signed for the 2022 season from Queensland side Mackay Cutters.

Gill, the son of former London Broncos star, Peter Gill, has failed to nail down a starting place in Brian McDermott’s side.

Speaking of his signing, McDermott commented; β€œBayley has a strong pedigree in the Australian game and I’m sure his father Peter Gill who played plenty of Super League games for London Broncos has steered his career well thus far. Bayley is extremely keen to show his qualities to the British fans and I’m really pleased to give him this opportunity.”

Both could play an important part in Dewsbury’s quest to stay in the Championship under new head coach Liam Finn.
