Tonight Leeds Rhinos hosted Hull KR, Wigan Warriors and Warrington Wolves met as Huddersfield Giants and Wakefield Trinity did battle.
Friday night Super League is often the best and tonight that was always going to be the case with some huge games with two of which very much living up to the hype.
Wigan and Warrington are serving up a fast paced classic on Sky Sports and there is plenty of quality on show despite the rain at Headingley as Leeds and Hull KR fight it out to move level on points with Salford Red Devils in the play-offs.
Leeds started the game the better with a quick ruck speed but Hull KR showed what they could do when they rolled Leeds down field with a seven tackle set before Brad Schneider hit a great late on the back of a turn up play to crash over on debut.
Shortly after Leeds hit back with a try of their own as Jarrod O’Connor scored a quintessential hooker’s try burrowing over after a quick ruck.
Leeds nearly doubled their money when a probing Aidan Sezer kick just evaded Ash Handley as Ethan Ryan bundled the ball out.
Brad Schneider was impressing on his Super League debut and his grubber kick was grounded by Tom Opacic just before the dead ball line.
It wasn’t all good for the star signing as he kicked the ball out on the full to the cheers of the South Stand.
Then, a lovely worked move down the Rovers right saw them create just enough space for Louis Senior to storm down the wing and dive in at the corner and the South Stand were silenced.
Trailing by 10 as the half drew to a close, Leeds needed a response and it came as Nene MacDonald carved through the Robins’ defence before finding Corey Johnson in support to score. It came shortly after MacDonald had come up with a vital try saving tackle.
However, the last say of the first half went the way of the Robins who notched a penalty for a high tackle to make it 18-12.
In the second half Leeds have hit back with a great try for Ash Handley on his 200th career appearance. It was his 100th Super League try as well.
In the end though missed opportunities cost Leeds as they went down to a Schneider drop goal in golden point.
A great contest, it was sadly sullied by items thrown onto the pitch from the Western Terraces where the Hull KR fans are located alongside some Leeds fans.
After Leeds’ first try, Jarrod O’Connor celebrated towards the Hull KR fans throwing the ball into the stand.
This prompted the throwing off two bottles onto the field with liquid spilling out of them as they descended.
In the second half there was a stoppage in play as Leeds prepared for a goal line drop out and another bottle was thrown onto the pitch.
The delay was extended as the official Tom Grant collected the bottle and saw that it was removed.
