Wigan Warriors wrote their name into the history books by defeating Hull KR 9-2 and their success has led to debate around their all-time standings in Super League.
It wasn’t a victory that will be particularly memorable as a display of dominance or sheer quality, barring Bevan French’s try, but it was a win that cemented their status as the first team to lift four trophies in the Super League era.
Only five teams had ever done it with just two of those coming post-war, the last being Wigan in 1994 and this new generation of Warriors have joined the old in the history books.
Matt Peet has transformed the fortunes of Wigan during his three years in charge and whilst he would likely lay the plaudits at someone else’s door, it’s undoubted the incredible impact he has had at Robin Park.
From a sleeping giant to the dominant force, Wigan Warriors now look in line to forge a dynasty and perhaps rival or beat St Helens’ famous four consecutive Grand Final wins.
Debate has now erupted regarding whether this current Wigan side are the best in Super League history already.
Is this Wigan Warriors team the best ever in Super League?

That was a question posed by Serious About Rugby League on Facebook with fans asked whether they agreed or disagreed with the following statement.
“This Wigan Warriors side is the greatest in Super League history.”
Fans from all clubs have now weighed in and the answer isn’t that straightforward.
Plenty were keen to refute that, including David Shutter who argued: ” Nah, 3/4 stand out players and a poor level of competition this year. Very good defence last night, but a truly great team would’ve created more chances and scored 30+ against HKR yesterday.”
Ian Carter stated: “Saints team 06 with Cunningham, Long, Sculthorpe and Lyon is still the best team in the Super League for me.”
Sean Elliott was another touting that St Helens’ side: “Super league isn’t what is used to be, the quality has dropped dramatically. Saints 2006 for me”
James Lawrence was one to agree with the statement: “The facts are now part of history so that is I believe very true statement Kings of rugby. Agree.”
The concept of comparing eras was hard but the fact that this Wigan Warriors side could still continue caught the eye of David Bell.
He said: “Lots of people saying that they aren’t and on the balance of things probably not. However, this could be the start of Wigan total domination and maybe in 3 years they will have surpassed St Helens and Leeds in the past. What is certain, they are the best now and will only get stronger.”
Krk Archer, a self-confessed St Helens fan responded: “Can we not just agree they’re a great team and have done something no other team has done yet. It’s hard to compare different eras. All I know is that, currently, they’re the greatest and should be applauded for an outstanding achievement.”
Simon Davies seemed to agree: “It’s impossible to compare teams from different years. The rules change, playing styles change, fitness levels change. The only genuine measure is trophies won and that means that this current Wigan team is definitely the best.”
Perhaps a third straight Grand Final win in 2025 might tip the scales in the favour of this Wigan Warriors side over any previous teams. It’s certain that they’ll be the favourites to do so.

Smelliners will never praise The Warriors, ever. They are too blinkered and driven by living in the shadow of Wigan, they will always hate Wigan, so the negative comments are expected. So meaningless.
