Explained: Why the Super League table was WRONG

The likes of Leeds Rhinos, Warrington Wolves, Hull FC, Hull KR, Salford Red Devils and Huddersfield Giants are all fighting for fifth and sixth in the Super League table and the accompanying play-off spot that comes with it.

This weekend’s fixtures were crucial in determining the play-off places with Warrington’s win over Hull FC putting them on 24 points and leaving Hull FC four points adrift.

Salford Red Devils also moved onto 24 points defeating Wakefield Trinity as did Hull KR with a win over Leigh Leopards.

Leeds Rhinos remained on 20 points with a defeat to Huddersfield who are now also on 20 points.

This means Warrington, Salford and Hull KR are all level on points in fifth, sixth and seven but there has been confusion over who is actually in sixth.

The confusion was caused because the Huddersfield v Salford game had been incorrectly reported with a penalty kicked by Salford after the final hooter which made the score 8-32 but as many have seen it was filed as 8-30.

That was only noticed in the last 24 hours because this weekend’s results meant that Salford and Hull KR are not only level on points, but very close on points difference.

Adding the extra 2 points to Salford means that both they and Hull KR have a points difference of plus 19 – when teams are level on points difference, next countback is points percentage (points scored divided by points conceded x 100), and Salford are fractionally above Hull KR on that, hence they are 6th and Hull KR 7th as things stand with Warrington 5th because their points difference is better.

This has now been corrected on the RFL’s official table and after a wait for the correct the score of the Huddersfield v Salford game on other tables they have automatically correct also clearing up the situation.

To confirm, Salford are in sixth place presently with Hull KR currently set to miss out on the play-offs in seventh.

Warrington are in the more secure position of fifth but with all three teams on 24 points it makes for a difficult scenario to determine which teams will make the cut.
