Exit of Super League playmaker confirmed

Adam Quinlan will be leaving Hull KR at the end of 2021, assistant coach Danny McGuire revealed in Rovers’ press conference today.

With the signing of Lachlan Coote from reigning champions St Helens, Quinlan was perhaps always going to find it tough to compete.

McGuire believes that the fullback role has changed over the past decade, but that it was a hard decision to not retain Quinlan.

McGuire knows all about Coote’s ability having played against the Australian in 2019 but he stressed it was not an easy decision to let Quinlan go.

“Fullbacks over the last maybe five or 10 years have become an extra pivot,” McGuire said.

“He needs to be able to play with the ball, he needs to have a kicking game and be a smart all-round footballer.

“I think anybody who’s watched Lachlan Coote knows he is that player. He’s got all the attributes – a fantastic kicker and a fantastic goalkicker as well.

“He’s going to be a great addition next year but we’ve got a fantastic fullback who is playing for us this year.

Next year is next year and we’ll look at that when it comes around.

“I’m sure Quinny will pick up another opportunity somewhere because he’s been such a good player.”
